"Point your fu**in* toes!"

If you were passing by our studio, it wouldn't be uncommon to hear one of our instructors screaming, "Point your toes!" For our regular students, they will recall (hopefully fondly) having those shouts directed at them or having their toes flicked, poked, and prodded, all in an attempt to align their unruly toes.

Now, you may be wondering, why should we point our toes? What's the big deal? Especially when we're already struggling with the exercise, why should we focus on something as trivial as pointing our toes?!

It's a valid question, one that I occasionally get asked, but more often, I see it written on the faces of my students when they are working hard but have forgotten about their toes. So, here are 5 reasons why you should point your toes during your Pole Dance Training!

1. Promotes Leg Tension

Pole Dancing and other forms of strength and flexibility training differ in how even basic movements require balance or skill. When it comes to balance, having a tight body (at least initially) goes a long way in making it easier. It's incredibly rare to see someone diligently pointing their toes while their legs are relaxed or loose. By focusing on pointing your toes, your legs will also be tight, making tricks on the pole way easier.

2. It Makes Everything Easier

Learning proper technique can be counter-intuitive. You strive for good technique because you want to perform tricks in the most efficient and easy way possible, but it often feels harder at first. The same goes for toe pointing and leg tension. Initially, it may feel like a major hassle, draining energy and attention from what seems more important. However, over time, the investment you make in training toe point and leg tension will pay off!

3. Habits Take Time

Pointing your toes is a habit that takes time to develop. Beginners often feel like they have enough to worry about and think, "I'll clean it up later!" While that may be true to some extent, our goal is for pointing the toes (and the resulting leg tension) to become an unconscious habit that requires less effort than staying loose. However, this habit needs to be built up over time.

4. It Carries Over to Everything

One great aspect of toe pointing and leg tension is that it has a carryover effect to other exercises. Training Pole Handstands for example? The toe point encourages overall body tension. Pointing your toes and keeping your legs tight will also aid in leg lifts, flexibility/mobility work, and any deadlift exercises. Time spent on toe pointing and leg tension is never wasted; in fact, it's almost always beneficial.

5. It Looks Better!

It´s the esthetic benefits of pointing your toes. It gives your movements a deliberate, purposeful, and controlled appearance. While having loose feet/ankles may be a personal choice, externally, that intention can be difficult to discern. On the other hand, pointing your toes always looks like a deliberate choice, and paradoxically, by exerting more effort, it makes your movements appear more effortless. Why should you want to make your exercises look good? For yourself. You're putting in the work, investing the time, so let that be reflected in the beauty of your exercises.

So, the next time your coach tells you to point your toes, you'll know why we do it. It's because we care about you and your training.
